Other Cushings in Portage: There was another Irish Cushing family in the Portage area. Edmond, Thomas, Daniel, and Bartholomew Cushing were brothers from Limerick Co., Ireland, who emigrated to New York in the 1840s, with their wives Ellen, Elizabeth, Mary, and Elizabeth, respectively. They all moved to the Portage area in about 1852: Edmond and Bartholomew moved to Lewiston, Thomas and Daniel moved to Portage. Bartholomew is in the 1855 state census of Lewiston, but his family seems to disappear. I have not seen any record of his family in the Federal census, in cemetery records, or in St. Mary's parish records, at least not in the 1800s. Daniel died in 1853, the year after their arrival in Portage, so we don't see much of him either. He is buried in St. Mary's cemetery with Mary and her second husband, Jeremiah Lawlee. Daniel and Mary's kids were Richard, who moved to Minnesota in the late 1870s, Catherine, his twin sister, and Margaret. The girls married brothers Michael and Daniel Mulcahy. We don't know why Catherine and Michael's cemetery marker says Catherine Cushing, adjacent to a marker for Michael. (No mention of Mulcahy! Though the photograph I saw would not have shown names on the other side of the stones.) (To make us wonder if there's a relationship between our families and these other Cushings, the Mulcahy farm is adjacent and north of the Dennis Cushing property in 1873.
We see quite a bit of the other two families - Edmond and Ellen in Lewiston and Thomas and Elizabeth in Portage - in church, cemetery, and census records. Edmond and Ellen had one son, Edward, who moved to Nebraska. The four girls married into other local families: Quimby, Bresnan, Drew, and Devine and some of their descendants are still in the area. Thomas and Elizabeth are buried in St. Mary's cemetery. I don't know what became of their children (Richard, Kate, Mary, Daniel, Lizzie, Thomas, and William). I believe that Thomas, Jr.'s son, Thomas William, is the Thomas W. buried in St. Mary's, with his wife, Katherine.
There are two Cushings I have so far been unable to associate with a family: Ellen Pearl (1890-1953) and Michael Thomas (1890-1948), buried in the same section of St. Mary's cemetery. Also, I haven't yet figured out who P. Cushing is on the 1873 Fort Winnebago plat map. This name is shown on land that was bought by and shown on later plat maps as J(ohn) Cushing (Cussen).
