Genealogy in General

Rootsweb - Hosts an enormous number of genealogical resources, dedicated to free access. (Was purchased by ancestry.com, but remains a good source of free information.) Site includes:

FamilySearch - Genealogy site of the LDS church's Family History Library. Includes access to the FHL catalog, the Ancestral File, an index to the 1880 US census and the 1881 Canadian census. I found two of my families in the Ancestral File, and have used many of the microfilmed records at my local Family History Center. Locations of Family History Centers is also available on this web site.

Cindy's list - widely accepted as the most comprehensive list of links to genealogy related web sites. (Hosted by Rootsweb.)

Local Sacramento links

Sacramento Public Library catalog - I've located several books in the Genealogy Collection or of other interest online, before visiting (and paying for parking!) the library downtown.

California State Library - includes Sacramento's History Room (900 N St.) and San Francisco's Sutro Library

Genealogical Association of Sacramento - They offer a good (and free) introductory series of classes and organize many trips to the National Archives (San Bruno), the Sutro Library (San Francisco), and the Family History Library (Salt Lake City). Their newsletter is a good source of information on local genealogy events.
